The artist commissioned thousands upon thousands of handmade sunflowers seeds from porcelain factories in Jingezhen, the place where for generations royal porcelains were made for both consumption of royalty and for export to Europe and other wealthy consumers. Weiwei filled the floor of Turbine Hall at the Tate with these handmade reproductions of a popular snack food.
